KW Chinese School Welcome New Students

The Saturday KW Chinese School (KWCS) housed in the Waterloo Collegiate Institute (WCI) welcomes new students in the Mandarin and Cantonese programs.

Naya Markanastasakis, the principal appointed by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), said “we have a voluntary board of volunteers, including the KWCS founder, Dr. Peter C. Chieh, helping us with the complex language issues. Representing the Central Ontario Chinese Cultural Centre, Simon Yam has coordinated the Chinese School for many years. COCCC, has helped Simon with funding support for decades. Since 2007, representatives of the Waterloo Chinese Community Association has also joined the voluntary board. We all strive to provide the best learning experience for our students., Of course we have highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers helping more than 460 students to learn Chinese and to soar in the Chinese-culture atmosphere. "

KWCS has already started the pre-registration process for all grades in both Mandarin and Cantonese for the fall. The registration fee is $40 per pre-registrant. The fee will be $50 in September when the term starts. The KWCS has classes from Junior Kindergarten to grade 12 in both Mandarin and Cantonese. Two classes are planned for the summer school.

Simon Yam, the coordinator, said that the Chinese School has been using the textbooks published by the Jinan University Press for teaching Chinese in areas other than China for the Mandarin program for many years. These textbooks are in simplified Chinese. Teachers have adopted the Romanized Pinying system for pronunciation. Credits are counted for grades 9-12 towards a high school diploma.

Cantonese speaking families may send their children to the Cantonese program. Textbooks are from the series of the Chinese Lingual-Cultural Centre of Canada in traditional Chinese character. Levels range from JK to 12.

Instructors usually supplement with additional relevant materials to maintain enthusiasm, taking into consideration individual needs and levels of comprehension. Volunteers maintain the the library with a growing collection of books and dvds for students to borrow for reading enjoyment at home.

Non-language cultural courses such as Chinese painting, dance, calligraphy, martial arts etc are also offered depending on enrollment and availability of instructors.

在滑铁庐高中(Waterloo Collegiate Institute, WCI)， 星期六上课的 KW 中文学校， 新学年度， 欢迎学生， 参加普通话和广东话班， 或者其他文化课程上课。

由滑铁庐区公立教育局委任的校长马娜雅(Naya Markanastasakis) 表示，他很感激许多志愿人士的帮忙，例如协调人任有生(Simon Yam) ，创办人揭钧(Peter Chieh) 及一些老幼，大家合力，她虽然不通中文，可是工作顺利进行，学校很有轨道，学生有很好的学习环境。

回顾1973年， 安省中华文化中心和中文学校同时成立，起初经费完全由文化中心和私人支助，文化中心成员，一直做协调人，补助不足经费，长达三十多年，中文学校成长到今天，是本区最大的少数文字学校。前年，WCCA也派代表参与协调工作。

KW中文学校，已经开始接受下年度的注册，预先注册费为40加元，开学后注册费是50元。广东话和普通话，都开办自幼子园到十二年班，他们希望大家赶快注册，以便准备教科书和教材, 聘请老师。

普通话的教科书，与往年一样，采用暨南大学出版， 专为海外教学用的简体中文和拼音教科书。

广东话班，采用加拿大-中华文化中心编辑的课本，这些课本是繁体中文，适应海外华侨家庭的习惯。

文化水平很高和经验丰富的老师们，除了书本，还自己编辑许多与孩子们切身有关的材料，让孩子们能够学以致用。义工们还照顾一个图书馆，孩子们可以借书，和CD回家阅读,欣赏和游戏。

除了语文，中文学校还进一步发展文化兴趣的课程，例如国画，舞蹈，武术，书法，民歌等等。这些课程，看学生兴趣和教师人才而定。
